Where does inspiration come from?

I recently came across a documentary on the Discovery Channel that originally aired in 2007 about the famous fashion designer Ralph Lauren’s car collection. I had interest in the documentary for two reasons: I appreciate both cars and art. In this instance, they go hand-in-hand as Lauren’s collection is considered one of the greatest in history – the cars are viewed as works of art.

Their timeless design was regarded to be ahead of their time when created. As a designer, I draw inspiration from great designers of the past and popular trends of the present. As a fashion designer, Lauren draws inspiration from his car collection to create new trends for his clothing line that are both current and timeless. It’s easy to see how Lauren could draw inspiration from his collection.

“Cars have always been a source of design inspiration for me. The cars I collect have a message of timeless beauty.” -Ralph Lauren

Drenched in Velour

Cozy as a kitten wrapped in marshmallow wrapped in vellour...
Cozy as a kitten wrapped in marshmallow wrapped in velour…

I may be getting old but today I feel like I’m 19 again. The HB creative squad presented me with a wonderful gift… that keeps on giving. I find myself wearing an Adidas sweatshirt and all I need now are the matching sweatpants and some rockin’ kicks.

It’s remarkable how the feel of something can trigger all sorts of emotions. That’s something many organizations have lost sight of. Many are so involved in online creative, social networking and Web 2.x – it’s all good and we love helping our clients in these areas. However, there’s nothing quite like a creative, well executed tactile experience – the kind you get when you open a box, touch some paper, hold something in your hands or wrap yourself in velour.

I hope that in 2010 the trends in online media will continue with their amazing and immediate ROI metrics. And I hope there’s a simultaneous consideration of throw-back strategies that can engage prospects like no email, web-site or social network could ever do. Happy New Year!

The history of the T-shirt

tshirt_bloga.jpg

In less than a century, the everyday t-shirt has gone from military issue undergarment to lucrative fashion statement. Until the late 1950s, it was considered unacceptable to be seen wearing only a t-shirt on the upper half of your body.

Needless to say, things have changed in the last 50 years.

More recently, both designers and companies have brought t-shirts and t-shirt design into the pop culture realm. In fact, some companies have founded their entire businesses based upon t-shirt fashion (see mixed martial arts stalwart Tapout, or the avant-garde Indie Shirts). Other companies have added the “graphic tee” into their already overflowing apparel line (see athletic giant Nike, or clothing store Gap). Exhaustive blogs have even been dedicated to t-shirt design (see the thorough and entertaining iloveyourtshirt.com).

With all of this knowledge, we recently finished a t-shirt design for the VMware President’s Club – a rewarding trip to Scottsdale for VMware’s most successful employees (pictured above). Our goal for the project was to fuse modern design with the southwest theme in VMware’s additional print collateral.

We hope to finish developing our own Hart•Boillot t-shirt(s) in the near future. It may not be sold at the Gap, or appear on a blog, but we can’t help but put our own spin on the t-shirt design culture.
